Every year, there are many frustrating situations that we as delegates endure over the conference. Waiting forever to get to our rooms, endless sessions, and running all over the Hyatt and Convention Center. One the most uncomfortable ones is riding the elevator.
We all have to use the elevator at some point, We all watch when fully stocked elevators open up and everyone says, “Sorry, we're full.” Worse, we all get stuck in a crowded elevator eventually and end up stopping on every single floor until we reach the second floor. This makes a trip down seem endless.
We've all been in those awkward situations where you pretend your texting in an attempt to avoid those awkward silences. You really want to make the time go by faster by starting a conversation, but don't know where to start.
Should you talk about the weather? Nah, way to overdone.
You could bring up the fact that many hotels do not list the thirteenth floor because of Triskaidekaphobia, fear of the number thirteen, but then again, no one cares if they list the floors accurately.
How about this? You can ask everyone who they're going to vote for Youth Governor this Saturday, a great Y&G topic starter. The only drawback is it only works if they've given it much thought.
Well, if the Voting topic starter doesn't pan out you can always resort to one of these easy questions/conversation starters.
1) Anyone see any good movies lately?
2) Hey you guys seen the Y&G Daily Voice Online? (Shameless Plug, we know)
3) Hey did you see what [insert name here] wrote in the classifieds?
Well, whatever you say, at least say something. Start a conversation with someone new, Who knows, they may became an awesome friend! Also, in case you happen to get stuck in an elevator, make sure to bring reading material (Preferably the Daily Voice) just in case the conversation dries up.
